City’s Human Relations Department Exceeds Federal Fair Housing Standards

GREENSBORO, NC – July 20, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The City of Greensboro’s Human Relations Department has met and exceeded the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) standards for fair housing assistance and enforcement in fiscal year 2009-10. This means that the department will retain its status as an equivalent agency to HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, which establishes polices that make sure all Americans have equal access to the housing of their choice.

“The Human Relations Department works hard to ensure that residents are treated fairly in housing,” said Anthony Wade, director of the City’s Human Relations Department. “HUD’s positive review of our efforts reflects the ongoing professionalism and expertise of our staff in supporting fair housing.”

The City’s Fair Housing Ordinance is considered equal to the Federal Fair Housing Act, both of which prohibit housing discrimination. A work-sharing agreement between HUD and the City allows federal reviews of the Human Relations Department’s performance. The FY 2009-10 review evaluated several areas ranging from evidence gathering and investigative case methodology to electronic information management.

Under the City’s Fair Housing Ordinance, it is against the law to discriminate in housing-related transactions on the basis of race, color, sex, familial status, religion, national origin, and disability (physical or mental).

In addition to investigating complaints of housing discrimination, the Fair Housing Division of the Human Relations Department provides education and training upon request to area organizations, businesses and real estate/property management agencies that provide housing-related services in Greensboro.
