A new, 60,000-square-foot YMCA is planned for southern Gastonia as part of the Parkside development near Martha Rivers Park.
The branch of the Gaston County Family YMCA would open in 2012 on 15 acres, officials with the organization said recently. Parkside is being developed by Gandy Communities on the former Howe Dairy Farm property off Neal Hawkins Road.
The YMCA would have a gymnasium, two pools, an indoor track and a large fitness center. It would replace a 22,000-square-foot facility on Union Road, and have about eight full-time employees and 150 part-time employees, officials said.
