Governor and First Lady Illuminate Mansion, Western Residence for World Autism Awareness Day
Raleigh, N.C. – April 2, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory will light both the Executive Mansion and the Western Residence in Asheville in blue this evening after sunset to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day.
“The executive mansion and western residence will be shining bright blue for autism awareness as we join landmarks, businesses, and homes around the world,” said First Lady Ann McCrory. “We are honoring these talented individuals and resilient families, and also highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and intervention.”
The governor signed a proclamation declaring April 2, 2015 as “World Autism Awareness Day” and the entire month of April as “World Autism Awareness Month.”
“We are proud to join the ‘Light it Up Blue’ campaign in 2015 to highlight the prevalence of autism in our state,” said Governor McCrory. “North Carolina is committed to spreading awareness of and offering support to individuals with autism.”
The lightings are part of the “Light It Up Blue” campaign, sponsored by the national organization Autism Speaks. Mrs. McCrory coordinated a lighting last year at the Executive Mansion.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services provides a variety of services to people with autism. Services are provided through the LME/MCO using state funds and primarily through the Medicaid Innovations waiver for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which includes individuals with autism and related disorders.
In addition, services are provided through the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation which provide employment services for individuals with autism. Services through DHHS support individuals with autism from early childhood through adulthood.
