Hagan Announces Transportation Grants to Help Homeless Veterans in NC

Open Door Ministries of High Point was awarded a grant to purchase a van

Washington, DC – November 20, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Kay Hagan announced today three federal transportation grants that will be used to aid homeless veterans in North Carolina. Three organizations in North Carolina were awarded grants to purchase a van to provide outreach to homeless veterans and to assist with transportation to medical appointments and employment opportunities.

“These grant awards will give community organizations crucial resources to help veterans who have fallen on tough times get back on their feet,” said Hagan. “North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the country, and I’m committed to ensuring that we do everything we can to support our servicemembers when they return home.”

The funds are distributed through the Department of Veterans Affairs Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program. The GPD program helps close gaps in available housing for the nation’s most vulnerable homeless veterans. Community-based programs funded by GPD provide homeless Veterans with support services and housing.

The following organizations were awarded grants for the acquisition of a van:

Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry: $19,487
FIRST at Blue Ridge: $22,100
Open Door Ministries of High Point: $17,327

Senator Hagan hails from a strong military family – her father-in-law was a two-star Marine General; her brother and father served in the Navy; her husband, Chip, is a Vietnam Veteran who used the GI Bill to help pay for law school; and she has two nephews who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
