Outer Banks Real Estate Owners Can Now View Workboats and Watermen in the Civil War Exhibit
Outer Banks, NC – March 8, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Outer Banks real estate owners may now view the Workboats and Watermen in the Civil War exhibit, which is one of the various events organized by Roanoke Island Festival Park to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
Outer Banks real estate owners need not worry that they will lack of opportunities to enlighten their children about the Civil War and North Carolina’s role in one of the country’s most tumultuous periods. With the Roanoke Island Festival Park offering a comprehensive list of activities and events to celebrate the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, parents and children are guaranteed never to run out of choices.
For this March, one of the park’s featured events is the Workboats and Watermen in the Civil War exhibit. It includes several interesting displays of flat bottomed boats that proved to be a successful tool that allowed the Union to successfully obtain access to coastal towns in the Outer Banks.
At the start, Union soldiers found their passage hampered by uncharted routes in the water and which were made more treacherous and challenging by silt-laden deltas, shifting inlets, and numerous swamps and marshes. Success had only become within reach for the Union forces when they had gained access to regional flat-bottomed boats common to the area. After finding local and expert boatmen willing and able to steer them to land, the Unions eventually claimed victories in Morehead and Elizabeth City as well as New Bern.
This exhibit is one of the many ways the park had ensured that locals and tourists alike learned of the vital role that little-known objects as well as communities had played in those years. The exhibit is located at one of the major site attractions of the park, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, and which had been recreated based on original plans.
Completed in 1877, the original lighthouse had only been decommissioned in 1955. An initial attempt to relocate the lighthouse unfortunately led to its destruction. Thankfully, the lighthouse later on underwent major renovation for a successful reopening in 2004. One of the most interesting features of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse was its use of Fresnel lens, which had been designed by the prestigious Parisian firm of Henri LePaute.
