Outer Banks CSI Campus Starts to Take Shape

-

Devil Hills, NC – October 17, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Outer Banks is about 1 year away from opening its University of North Carolina’s Coastal Studies Institute CSI Campus, giving it all its constructional needs to develop the research programs conducted since 2003.

The university’s institute teams up with other state universities that also have marine science programs & will function as a home to research and education for marine science.

The partners of the university’s institute are UNC at Chapel Hill & Willington, North Carolina State University, East University and Elizabeth City State University.

The site covers almost 200 acres, but only 35 acres is being utilized for the campus, which will feature a modern construction that minimizes its effect on the vulnerable upland & marsh areas to create a campus that is as environmentally-friendly as possible.

The campus will feature dormitories, marina facility and a huge 50,000 square foot education and research facility equipped with state of the art wet labs, auditorium and the newest technology in distance education.

Even though this is a new project in Outer Banks, the institute has actively participated in the community for the last 8 years. At the moment, it has conducted a $6 million grant-funded research that concentrates on storm water runoff impacts, renewable ocean energy and the Outer Banks maritime history.

The institute will provide college-level courses to undergraduates, graduates & faculty who are able to make research related to coastal sciences. It will also offer educational programs to the community.
The dormitories will be in cottage-style that can shelter 70 people. A canal and a marina will be in the site that connects to the existing canals which will provide researchers and students convenient access to the sound.

The institute will still continue their outreach programs, especially for the northeastern NC’s K-12 residents. CSI already has a number of outreach programs at area schools and in the fields and now, is starting a constructed wetlands project at Manteo High School & aquaculture program at Cape Hatteras Secondary School.

The researchers of the institute will concentrate on the 4 main research areas, comprising of human health and estuarine ecology, engineering and coastal processes, coastal sustainability and public policy & maritime heritage.

For the last 4 years, the institute has been implementing an ongoing research on World War II’s Battle of the Atlantic sunk ships of the coast
