City Provides Fair Housing Outreach to Arabic Community on July 23

GREENSBORO, NC – July 20, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The City of Greensboro’s Human Relations Department and the Human Relations Commission’s International Advisory Committee are offering a free educational workshop on fair housing to Sudanese and other Arabic speaking residents at 2 pm Saturday, July 23, at the Greensboro Historical Museum, 130 Summit Ave. The workshop is being conducted in partnership with the Sudanese Community Organization.

An interpreter will assist Fair Housing Specialist Cheryl Gant as she speaks about protections under the federal Fair Housing Act and the Greensboro Fair Housing Ordinance. “Whether residents are native-born, immigrants, or refugees, Greensboro is committed to the successful transition of all individuals into our community,” said Human Relations Director Dr. Anthony Wade. “Fair housing education fosters awareness of the City’s ordinances and programs that involve equity of treatment in housing opportunities for individuals and families. We want everyone to view Greensboro as a great place to live, work and play.”

In the future, the Human Relations Department will conduct fair housing education in other languages such as Spanish, French, Swahili, Rhade, Vietnamese, and Burmese through a grant received from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The federal Fair Housing Act and the City’s Fair Housing Ordinance make it unlawful for a person to be discriminated against based on race, color, gender, religion, national origin, disability, or family status. For more information about the workshop, contact Robert Nunn at 336-373-2038.
